PDLC film contains millions of microscopic liquid crystal droplets suspended within a polymer matrix, sandwiched between two thin layers of ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) — a transparent electrical conductor — and then bonded between glass or applied as a self-adhesive film.
With no electrical current, the liquid crystal droplets are randomly oriented. This random orientation scatters incoming light in all directions, creating the characteristic frosted, opaque appearance. No power is required to maintain this state — the film is opaque by default.
When a low-voltage AC current is applied through the ITO electrodes, an electric field forms across the film. The liquid crystals respond by aligning parallel to this field, allowing light to pass through unobstructed. The glass becomes fully transparent in under 100 milliseconds.
Switching occurs with zero mechanical movement — completely silent. Energy consumption is only 3–5W per square metre while active. On power failure, the film immediately reverts to its opaque state, ensuring privacy is always maintained without any user intervention.
Lucentraa PDLC film is compatible with standard building management systems. Control via wall switch, remote control, occupancy sensor, smartphone app, or integrate with KNX, Crestron, Home Assistant, and other smart home platforms for fully automated privacy.
